The Oak Park Story

The Oak Park Story

The Oak Park Story was a very powerful documentary that I had the great opportunity to work on as the dialogue editor and re-recording mixer. Before bringing me on board, the wonderful director Valerie Soe said, “Sound has never been my strong point. Can you do that?” Some of Valerie’s renowned films include: Mixed Blood, Picturing Oriental Girls: A (Re) Educational Videotape, (Best Bay Area Short, Golden Gate Awards, San Francisco International Film Festival) and “ALL ORIENTALS LOOK THE SAME,” (Best Foreign Video, Festival Internazionale Cinema Giovani; First Place, Experimental Category, Visions of U.S. Festival).

“The Oak Park Story is a documentary film that recounts the journeys of three families – from Cambodia, Mexico, and California – who band together at a run-down slum in Oakland CA and win a landmark settlement against their landlord.” This documentary premiered at the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival at the Kabuki Theater in Japantown on March 14, 2010. The theater was packed! More screenings can be found here.

Much of my work involved eliminating some naughty buzzes and hums and occasionally fixing recordings where the lav was accidentally touched by the talent :) I had plenty of time to work on this so everything went very smoothly. I feel that the more time the post-sound team has to do their work, the better the soundtrack will be as a whole.

They just launched their brand new website yesterday (October 12, 2010). Click here to go there!
